Big Thunder Mountain

Up ] [ Big Thunder Mountain ] Phantom Manor ]

Minimum height 1.02m, not recommended for children under 3. Fastpass available. On-ride photo.

Big Thunder Mountain may not be the most intense rollercoaster experience, but it is one of the most exciting rides. Most of the ride is located on an impressive artificial mountain island that dominates the Frontierland skyline, but you board the mine train at the shore of the lagoon - this means that the first part of your journey is in an underground 'mine shaft' that takes you to the island. As Frontierland is the site of an old mining town, Big Thunder Mountain is the gold mine at its centre. In the ever-winding queue (make sure you use Fastpass if available) you get to see plenty of mining equipment and machinery, much of it authentic and working. There is also an on-ride photo - the camera is positioned where the train takes a sudden dip towards the water on the Phantom Manor side of the island. From the top of the mountain there is a great view over the park, but I don't recommend taking any photos in case you drop the camera. Unlike Space Mountain and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril there are no inversions, so you are only held in by a lap bar. Like many wooden rollercoasters, be prepared for sudden drops and turns and a bumpy ride!
